2009 LEGISLATIVE ISSUES

Veterans Benefits

Approximately 6,000 West Virginians have served in recent overseas conflicts. A survey conducted by a committee I co-chair found that nearly 48% are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or depression. Because of their extraordinary sacrifices, as a state, we must do more to ensure that they receive the best services that can be provided. Two areas in which our veterans committee has concluded we can do more are in health care and education. I will be introducing legislation that will require colleges and universities to become "military friendly." In addition, I will sponsor legislation that will begin the process of ensuring that all health care providers (including mental health providers) are properly trained to help veterans and their families.
