Children and Families
Local citizens have brought to my attention several issues relating to the ability of parents to bear children and hold onto employment. For example, I was not aware that unlike in other states, most faculty members at WVU have no maternity or paternity leave. In addition, I discovered that all 58 private health insurance plans in our state deny coverage to pregnant women. Another issue I will be working on concerns children who want to be adopted. I want to be a champion for kids in our state who have not been able to find a permanent home - under our laws and policies, they are out in the cold when they turn 18. I know we can do better than that!
